It's a well known catchphrase and every great leader in the church and business worlds live by it. We as leaders don't know everything and the quicker we come to that realization, the faster we become great leaders. I've seen to many "leaders" head into the front lines with a full-of-himself attitude and only fall on their face. Leaders are to be humble, knowing when to lead and when to let others on their team lead, they know their strengths and weaknesses and surround themselves with people that complement them to fulfill their God-Given vision.
Great places to learn...in short....everywhere. Great leaders learn from the smallest and unlikely sources. Great leaders are always on the look out for new ideas, not that they are going to implement everything they see and experience. Great leaders look for opportunities to learn.
Here are a couple of sources of knowledge:
- Books. Duh! They might be an old technology, but they are a great place to stretch your mind.
- Blogs. Most of the great minds in the business and church worlds blog. To get a chance to see right into their brain is priceless.
- Magazines & Journals. Keeps a finger on the heartbeat of the culture in every area of life.
- Podcasts. Have you search iTunes recently to see what all is available there? If not you're are missing out.
- Mentors. You might have a different calling on your life and ministry then them, but most leadership principles are timeless and overlapping.
- People Under You. Just because you are in charge doesn't mean you know the answer. Take the time to hear the hearts of those around you. If you hired the right team, that is exactly what you will be in achieving your vision...a team.
The list could, honestly, go on and on. The key is to always be learning. I've challenged myself to read at least four books a month, keep up on my blog reader and seek out a mentor. How are you learning?
